How flower logistics work – Understand the journey to your shop door
Share
Every flower you sell in your shop has already traveled a long way. This journey begins at the auction, where exporters make their purchases. Whether in Aalsmeer, Naaldwijk, or Rijnsburg—thanks to a well-established transport system, it makes little difference where your wholesaler is located. Even imported goods are delivered directly to the wholesaler—often on the same day.
What many florists don't realize: Transport costs have a significant impact on the final price. A delivery vehicle that stops at your location usually calculates two CC containers per delivery. If you only order one, you often still pay for two – not as a matter of principle, but because stopping otherwise doesn't make economic sense.
A clever solution is to order together with a colleague. This saves on transport costs and makes ordering more efficient. Or fill two containers at once—for example, with larger plants or ceramics. You don't pay extra for the additional space.
Be sure to talk to your supplier. How are the transportation costs calculated? Is there a tiered price for larger orders? Is another pricing model possible? The better you understand the system, the easier it will be for you to use it – bringing not only beautiful flowers to your shop but also real added value to your business.
